The 5th Young Scholars’ Conference on China Studies- Call for papers

Call For Papers:
The China Studies Programme of Hong Kong Baptist University is pleased to announce the Call For Papers for the 5th Young Scholars’ Conference on China Studies. The Conference will be held on 18 -19 December 2017 at the Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong. This conference aims at offering a great opportunity for postgraduate students and young faculty members to build up a stronger professional network in China Studies to better facilitate your research and future development.

Organizers & Co-organizers:
The organizers of the Conference are from different departments in Hong Kong Baptist University, including China Studies Programme, Institute of Creativity, Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies and Master Programme of Social Sciences in Contemporary China Studies. Co-organizers of the Conference include: School of Humanities, School of Social Sciences, Institute of Education of Tsinghua University(China), Institute of Taiwanese History, Academia Sinica(Taiwan), Asia-Pacific Cluster for Chinese Entrepreneurial Studies at the University of Queensland(Australia), and Asper School of Business of the University of Manitoba (Canada).

Conference Themes:
We are inviting proposals for paper presentation addressing the “New Orders in Global Politics and Economics – The Challenges and Opportunities of China Studies” through one of the following themes:


Economics Geography
Sociology History
International Relation Studies Language Studies
Educational Studies Cultural Studies
Business and management Sinology

Proposal ideas that extend beyond these thematic areas will also be considered.

Submission of Abstracts:
Interested scholars are welcome to complete the online application form( on or before 23:59 1st October 2017(HK time). Authors of the accepted papers will receive an invitation email on or before 17 October 2017. The Conference honors papers that exemplify the highest standards in enlightenment and academic contribution. Members of the Conference Committee would select 2-3 winning papers from the accepted papers for the Outstanding Paper Award. Interested participants please submit your FULL paper on or before 1 November by email (

Conference Details:
For overseas participants, HKBU would provide accommodation at the NTT International House in the campus, on a twin sharing basis from Dec. 17 to Dec 20. Meals during the 2-days-conference are included. Registration fee for the conference is waived.

Orientation Workshop AY2017/18


Welcoming all new-coming students to MCCS big family!

On 29th August 2017, the Programme Office of Master of Social Sciences (Contemporary China Studies) held an Orientation Workshop for all new-coming students. Prof. Mak King Sang, the new MCCS Programme Director, delivered a welcoming speech to new students with introducing the features of our Programme.  Besides, Dr. Chan Hing Lin (from Economics Department), Dr. Li Jianfeng (from Geography Department), Dr. Kowk Kam Chau (from History Department), and Dr. Chew Ming Tak Matthew (from Sociology Department) met with each concentration students. 

Students were inspired by the sharing from two MCCS graduates (Miss XU Jingying and Mr. Choco Zeliang Zhang) of their past studies in MCCS Programme and life in HKBU as well as Hong Kong. 

Thank you all of you for attending the Orientation Workshop.

ECON7510 Field Trip 16 March 2017

Dr. Chan Hing Lin, course instructor of ECON7510 China's Economic Development and Reform, led MCCS students to Shenzhen to visit two well-known companies to understand their operation and structural development within the nearby zones, the whole country, and even around the world.



Han's Laser Technology Industry Group Co., Limited
The first company they visited was Han's Laser Technology Industry Group Co., Limited. Han's Laser mainly manfactures products of lasper series with different techonologies (including encraving, marking, etching, welding, and cutting and so on.). A staff from Han's Laser, acted as a tour guide, introduced the different types of machines varies from small scale to extreme large scale in their different working rooms. Students experienced some cutting machine and felt amazing that the hyper-speed of the manufacturing procedures. 



BYD Company Limited

After meal, students visited another famous brand BYD Company Limited. BYD Company was found in 1995 and engaged in battery business at the very beginning. They started to enter automobile industry in 2003. The recent development trend of BYD Company is quite a large proportion of automaker with cutting edge technology in batteries, electronic control, charging infrastructure, etc. Besides, the company also demostrated students the coming revolutional transport BYD "Skyrail" aimed at easing traffic congestion within communities. Students learned the vertical and horizontal expansion of BYD Company in the past few years.   The meaningful trip ended with the motto of BYD "Build Your Dream".
